It’s bizarre to think that there was ever a time where communication wasn’t so immediate. My mate Johnny sums that feeling up:

As covered in A Short History of the Internet by Bruce Sterling, upon the introduction of the internet, it wasn’t always utilised by all people, it was initially used just as a military measure to communicate after the war.

“A fax machine is only valuable if *everybody else* has a fax machine.” Computers and the internet were purely a theory until they slowly but surely became a necessity. Now, it would be far more unusual for someone not to be active on the internet because it has become such an important part of everyday life for so many.

Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, YouTube: we create and maintain global networks everyday without even thinking twice about it.
